Taiwan's TANet
Liu Zi-Di
<color@twnmoe10.Edu.TW>
TANet, the Taiwan Academic Network, is a project undertaken by the
Ministry of Education and University Computer Centers to establish a
common national academic network infrastructure. To support research
and academic institutions in Taiwan, TANet will provide access to unique
resources and opportunities for collaborative work. TANet will be a
major part of the Taiwan Internet community which includes other
industry network such as SEEDnet.
The management structure of TAnet is a two-layer hierarchy. The
TANet network service center (TANSC) will be responsible for the
national backbone network and management of the international link
to JvNCnet. Within each regional area, a regional network service
center (RNSC) will undertake the role of supporting the connections and
providing the necessary services from the local area network and/or
campus of each university/institution to the interface into the TANet
backbone. For the moment, TANSC is run by the Ministry of Education
Computer Center, and each RNSC is run by a leading regional university.
The TANet backbone will initially focus on the TCP/IP protocol
suite. Regional networks may support additional protocols and additional
facilities, including X.25 transport or telephone dial-up services
on a local basis, in accordance with regional requirements. Support
for OSI (CLNS) routing will be introduced in the near future. The
existing TAIWAN BITNET applications (including e-mail, netnews and
file transfer) will be supported over TANet via IP connections.
